  • Fellowship Training in Neonatal – Perinatal Medicine
  •      The Neonatology Unit, Department of Pediatrics, Prince of Songkla University has been certified for Fellowship Training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine by the Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand since December 1, 2008.
         The training is almost always held in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Songklanagarind Hospital. The hospital provides maternal and neonatal care, and is the referral point for high risk pregnancies and newborns from various hospitals in the south of Thailand.
         The hospital has 3,500 deliveries, and has approximately admitted patients in NICU level IV 500-550 infants per year. The hospital has a full facility of medical personnel (Neonatologists and related sub-specialists) along with the equipment to provide comprehensive care for extremely low birth weight, complex congenial heart disease, neonatal surgical problems and other medical problems.
         In this training course, students will gain comprehensive knowledge of diseases concerning preterm and term infants, including underlying physiology and management. Students will also gain clinical competency in acute resuscitation, and all procedures required in the NICU.

         All applicants must be eligible for the Thai Diploma Board of Pediatrics from the Medical Council of Thailand

  • Rotation


         - Critically ill neonate (at least 60 weeks)
         - Perinatal medicine (at least 4 weeks)
         - Elective course (at least 16 weeks)

  • Course contents


         - Academic course: neonatal conference, journal club, Neonatal grand round, morbidity-mortality conference, inter-hospital neonatal case
           conference
         - Clinical skill: Neonatal resuscitation and stabilization for high risk neonate, intensive care, follow-up clinic, procedure requirement including;
           umbilical catheterization, peripherally inserted central catheter placement, targeted neonatal echocardiography and cranial ultrasound
         - Research: One research project, per student, and it will be submitted before the National Sub-board Neonatology examination. We encourage
           fellows to develop their own research interests with active participation and under the direction of neonatal staff.

  • Elective course


         Recommended elective course (at least 8 weeks: genetics, radiology, pediatric cardiology, lactation clinic, developmental-behavioral medicine) and a free elective course (at least 8 weeks)

  • Assessment


         Progression from first year to the second is dependent on satisfactory performance and success at our Structured Oral Examination (short and long cases) and MCQ.
