  • Residency Training in Psychiatry
  •      The psychiatric residency training program at the faculty of medicine, Prince of Songkla university was founded in 1993, and has since offered an opportunity for residents, to receive training in general psychiatry, and to begin a career balanced with both clinical and academic activities.
         The core psychiatric program is designed to provide clinical experience for the development of basic knowledge, as well as the clinical skills needed to practice in all sectors of contemporary psychiatry.

        3 years, starting on July the 1st in each year

         The applicant must have a valid Thai Medical practice license.

  • Educational objectives


         Medical doctors who complete their psychiatric residency training will have standardized, contemporary knowledge along with the clinical skills to treat psychiatric patients in various clinical settings, regarding holistic medical approach.
         They will be able to; provide clinical expertises to evaluate an entire range of psychiatric illnesses, competence in psychiatric treatment by using fundamental modalities of therapy and be able to convey the knowledge gained to other medical personnel.

  • Rotation


         22.5 months of practice in general psychiatry , emergency psychiatry and consultation liaison psychiatry
            3 months in neurological unit
            3 months in child and adolescent psychiatry
            3 months in mental hospital psychiatry
            1 months in addiction psychiatry
            0.5 months in forensic psychiatry
            0.5 months in community psychiatry
            0.5 months in geriatric psychiatry
            2 months in an elective program (mandatory)

  • Course contents


         The program is divided into 3 year of training.
           Year 1
             The first year consists of 9 months - general psychiatry training and 3 months - neurological training. Focusing on an introduction of psychiatry; interviewing techniques for valuation, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses in outpatients , inpatients and emergency care services. All of these subjects will be the main objectives of the first years training.
           Year 2
             The second years emphasizes is on outpatient and inpatient clinical experiences while focusingmore on consultation liaison services in the setting of; mental hospital psychiatry at SomdetChaopraya Institute of Psychiatry. Additionally, residents will engage in child and adolescent psychiatry at Chulalongkorn hospital Ramathibodi hospital or Siriraj hospital in Bangkok. The second years program was designed for clinical skills in hospital-based psychiatry and work in community care. Residents will be responsible for psychotherapy, which will continue throughout the residency training program.
             As a senior resident in inpatient services, each resident works with junior residents and medical students, which provides an excellent opportunity to improve his, or her teaching skills. In addition, they are allowed to develop their own research project.
           Year 3
             The third year, will focus on developing leadership abilities with consolidating clinical knowledge and clinical skills as they are psychiatrist-to-be.
             Clinical rotation consists of ; Addiction psychiatry at Phramongkutklao hospital, Forensic psychiatry at Galya Rajanagarindra Institute,Community psychiatry at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, Geriatric psychiatry at Chulalongkorn hospital, Siriraj hospital, Chiang Mai university or KhonKaen hospital, to prepear residents for their board examination of psychiatry.


  • Elective course


         2 months in other related units such as; consultation liaison, child psychiatry, day Hospital , military psychiatry within other institutions.

         1. Cognitive domain
           - Annual examination with MCQ ,CRQ and Essay
           - Oral examination in 3 RD year
           - Academic conference presentation
         2. Clinical skills
           - Annual examination with case interview
           - Monthly evaluation by psychiatric staff
           - Evaluation by psychosocial intervention(PSI) staff in group therapy , home visit activity
         3. Attitudes
           - Observation by psychiatric staff , PSI staff ,patient ‘s opinions
